Fashion For Life. Cancer Touches Us All.

Fashion For Life

Have you heard of it?
It is one of Second Life's oldest events.
An event that raises money for a cause that has touched us all in one way or another.
Cancer.

This is my story.

When my dad was first diagnosed with lung cancer I was shocked.
He was my Dad, my rock my everything.
Things moved quickly, getting to specialists then admitted for surgery
to remove part of his lung and lymph nodes.
Dad spent his recovery in his recliner I remember as he was too sore to lay down.
They had to spread his ribs to get to his lungs, I felt so helpless as they was not much I could do to help ease that pain for him.
But we were hopeful, he was healing slowly but healing.

Then almost 1 year later at a check up the Dr found a lump on his neck.
We were off and running, specialists, tooth extractions for radiation, tests..
It was endless. Eventually he began collapsing, seems it had gone up into his brain.
The hospital kept sending him home, waiting waiting for treatment that seemed  would never happen. Finally after collapsing yet again we just flat out refused to take him home with us.
He needed treatment, yet seemed to be on ignore.
So finally he was admitted. But died a week later.
I was 19.

It was quiet in the house with just my mum and myself.
Staying up all hours doing jigsaw puzzles at the kitchen table as if silently trying to piece back together our lives.

Fast forward 5 years.

My Mum walked me down the isle as I married the love of my life.
Only to be admitted to hospital while we were on our honeymoon.
She had been dealing with poor circulation for years now and ended up having 5 operations over the course of 7 months.
Finally we began to see the light, She was making good progress at rehab , learning to walk with a prosthesis.
Until she was sent home for the Christmas holidays on December 22.

"Merry Christmas Have a great holiday..
Oh by the way..
We got those test results back, The pain you have been having in your back..
So sorry, cancer in your spine also your lymph nodes, lungs and brain."

I was called at work by the rehab center and told the same thing.
(These people lost their jobs)

I held my Mum's hand as she passed away On February 22, 2001.
Exactly two month after the harsh diagnoses.

Cancer is everywhere.

It has touched everyone in some shape or form.
Not only do we need to fight for a cure but we need to fight for our medical system to have more compassion for those suffering.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you came this far with me please..
Shop, shop, shop.
So one day we might find a cure for this horrible disease.

Thank you.
Ember
